Chaga mushroom is a type of mushroom that grows mainly on the burst of birch trees in cold climates, such as those of Scandinavia, Siberia, Canada and Alaska. In Dutch we call the Chaga mushroom Berkenweerschijnzwam and in Latin Inonotus obliquus. For centuries, chaga has been used as a traditional in Scandinavia, mainly for general health.
Chaga is low in calories, rich in fiber and filled with antioxidants. Chaga probably has the highest ORAC value of any plant food in the world
What is Chaga extract?
Chaga aka the Birch weather fungus grows on birch trees and nourishes our bodies with powerful minerals. Chaga is adaptogenic and boasts over 215 phytonutrients, glyconutrients and is rich in amino acids, dietary fiber, antioxidants, ionized minerals, vitamins, phenols and enzymes. Chaga mushroom contains beta-glucan-rich polysaccharides. The extract is a practical and natural form of preservation that preserves all these benefits of Chaga without the need to stock fresh mushrooms.
Active ingredients in Chaga
Chaga mushrooms contain an array of beneficial, active ingredients. Some of the main ingredients are polysaccharides, antioxidants, betulinic acid, phytosterols and melanin. Furthermore, Chaga contains plant steroids, such as lanosterol and inotodiol.
All of these active ingredients individually have specific effects, but together they are stronger. Chaga is low in calories, rich in fiber and filled with antioxidants. Chaga probably has the highest ORAC value of any plant food in the world
What is ORAC value?
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. This is the potential power and ability to neutralize free radical activity and damage. Antioxidants help the body tackle free radicals.
What was mentioned earlier that Chaga probably has the highest ORAC value of any plant-based food in the world, actually the highest of any food in the world.
Polysaccharides
Chaga contains several types of polysaccharides. Scientific research shows that polysaccharides have beneficial properties. And these very polysaccharides are frequently found in Chaga.
Betulinic acid
Betulinic acid is a plant substance found particularly in large quantities in birch bark and the chaga mushroom (Birch weather mushroom) . The natural acid is a so-called pentacyclic triterpenoid, which researchers have found to be a powerful antioxidant.
Betulin and Betulinic acid are two components unique to Chaga. Beta glucan is a potent stimulant found in Chaga and various mushrooms.
Phytosterols
Phytosterols or plant sterols, are a group of cholesterol-like substances found in the cell membranes of certain plant species, such as mushrooms, nuts and soybean. Phytosterols in Chaga are steroids of which lanosterol and inotodiol are the most important.
Production
Due to the delicate process of extract production, the phytonutrients in the Chaga remain undamaged. The extract does not need to steep as a tea. It can be consumed with cold, lukewarm and hot water (about 80 degrees). To make 1 kilogram of Chaga mushroom extract, about 8 kilograms of raw Chaga is needed. The product remains pure, nothing is added to it.
A cheaper alternative: Chaga powder
In addition to Chaga Extract, Organic Chaga powder is also available on the market. The difference is hard to see but the difference in results is even more so. Chaga powder is not comparable to Chaga Extract in quality and effectiveness, which is why powder is cheaper. To be effective, tea must be made from the powder and infused for 45 minutes to 3 hours.

Thus, one gram of extract is equivalent to 15 grams of fresh Chaga.
Making chaga tea
Chaga tea is easy to make by mixing half a teaspoon of powder with a cup of hot water. This drink is equivalent to birch meadow mushroom tea or Chaga powder tea that has been boiled for at least three hours. What exactly are Antioxidants?
The most well-known antioxidants are Vitamin C & Vitamin E and have a protective function for the body, but what do these antioxidants actually do? Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals.
Free radicals are formed during the body’s metabolic process, which produces energy. The body uses oxygen to extract energy from carbohydrates and fats, during this process the dreaded free radicals are created. These are a byproduct of metabolism and therefore unavoidable. But too many free radicals are not good for the body. For example, excessive exercise, too much sunlight, poor diet, smoking, certain substances in cosmetics, detergents and even excessive stress can create these free radicals. Free radicals can be harmful to tissues and cells in our body and therefore need to be cleaned up. This is because they react with any substance they encounter. When they cause damage, this is called oxidative stress. It actually pretty much speaks for itself, an antioxidant counteracts oxidation. An example to make it clearly visible is an apple: If you leave a pre-cut apple for a while, it turns brown. That the apple turns brown is because the flesh of the apple reacts to oxygen, oxidation. If you sprinkle lemon juice on the apple slices, there will be less discoloration, because it contains the antioxidant vitamin C that prevents oxidation.
