Extraction 2.0 – Why do we extract?

Mushrooms require an extensive extraction process to make their interesting compounds bioavailable. That’s because the cell walls of mushrooms are made of chitin, a natural fibrous substance that is generally considered indigestible in the human gut. For example, if unextracted mushroom powder is consumed, most of the compounds would pass right through the human digestive tract.

However, behind the chitin walls lie valuable components that are beneficial to our health. While cooking can help bring out some of the medicinal properties, there is one preparation method that allows for the most optimal bioavailability of medicinal mushroom compounds: extraction.

Through certain extraction methods for each species of mushroom, the interesting compounds become bioavailable. Extraction also allows us to concentrate the compounds of interest for our mushroom tinctures. Therefore, extraction is fundamental in creating an effective mushroom supplement. So by carefully extracting mushrooms, we ensure that they become biologically available to humans and have an active effect as soon as they are digested.

The compounds of interest to KÄÄPÄ Health are those that have been clinically shown to evoke health-promoting effects, such as β-(1,3)-(1,6)-D-glucans, or simply beta-glucans.

Why do we extract as we extract?

At KÄÄPÄ Health, we use leading Ultrasonic Assisted Extraction (UAE) technology to produce pure and potent mushroom extracts. The advantages of using the UAE method are to optimize the bioavailability of compounds of interest in mushrooms. This new technology increases the effectiveness and efficiency of the extraction process.

UAE also allows us to extract at lower temperatures, which is beneficial for heat-sensitive compounds. Heat is needed to extract certain compounds, but too much heat can also destroy other important compounds. By increasing extraction effectiveness with UAE while reducing heat, we can produce more potent, broader spectrum mushroom extracts.

Combined with the UAE, our extraction protocols also use traditional extraction processes. All mushrooms require hot water and many are also followed by extraction with ethyl alcohol. The hot water releases the water-soluble compounds and the alcohol extract dissolves the chitin to release the water-insoluble compounds. In the UAE, a very high-frequency shock wave (also called acoustic cavitation) is used to break down the cell walls of the mushroom and release the compounds of interest without damaging the compounds. This not only greatly increases the yield of compounds of interest, but also reduces the time required for extraction.

Instructions for use Shiitake Mushroom Tincture:

Use sublingually by placing under the tongue and swallowing. Or add to tea, coffee, smoothies or recipes.

In 30-ml bottles, 1 full pipette is equivalent to 0.6 ml and in 50-ml bottles, 1 full pipette is 1 ml.
